Standard Concrete Mix Ratios
Below are the standard concrete mix ratios for various grades from ordinary to high-strength concrete:
Grade | Mix Ratio (C:S:A) | Strength (MPa) | Typical Use |
---|---|---|---|
M5 | 1:5:10 | 5 | Non-structural work, bedding |
M7.5 | 1:4:8 | 7.5 | Mass concrete, foundations |
M10 | 1:3:6 | 10 | Light foundations, floorings |
M15 | 1:2:4 | 15 | Pavements, general purpose |
M20 | 1:1.5:3 | 20 | Reinforced concrete, beams |
M25 | 1:1:2 | 25 | Heavy structures, columns |
M30 | 1:0.75:1.5 | 30 | Commercial buildings, bridges |
M35 | 1:0.5:1 | 35 | High-rise buildings |
M40 | 1:0.4:0.8 | 40 | Pre-stressed concrete |
M45 | 1:0.3:0.6 | 45 | Industrial floors, heavy-duty |
M50 | 1:0.25:0.5 | 50 | Special structures, runways |
Important Notes:
- 1 bag of cement = 50 kg ≈ 0.0347 m³ (1440 kg/m³ density)
- Sand density ≈ 1700 kg/m³ (1600-1800 kg/m³ range)
- Aggregate density ≈ 1650 kg/m³ (1500-1800 kg/m³ range)
- 1 cubic meter (m³) = 35.3147 cubic feet (ft³)
- Water-cement ratio typically 0.4-0.6 (0.5 used in calculations)
- Dry volume = Wet volume × 1.54 (accounts for bulking and shrinkage)
- High-strength mixes (M30-M50) often require admixtures and special aggregates
