A dependable asphalt estimate connects measured area, compacted layer depth, mix density, placement allowance and supplier pricing. Use the calculator as a transparent planning tool, then verify the assumptions against drawings, site conditions and the approved pavement specification.

How the calculation works

The paved footprint is multiplied by compacted depth to determine base volume. Compaction and waste allowances are applied before volume is converted to mass using the selected asphalt density.

Tonnage = Length × Width × Depth × Factors × Density

Measure irregular areas

Divide curves, tapers and non-rectangular surfaces into smaller rectangles or simple shapes. Calculate each section separately and add the quantities. This creates a more traceable estimate than using one rough average.

Select the correct depth

Enter the finished compacted asphalt thickness—not the loose placement depth. Driveways, parking areas and road layers can require different designs depending on traffic, subgrade strength and local specifications.

Use a verified density

The default density is a planning value. Actual bulk density varies by aggregate, binder, mix type and supplier. Use the approved job-mix or supplier value whenever accurate procurement quantities are required.

Apply allowances deliberately

Waste covers practical losses and small geometric variation. The optional compaction factor can model a separate loose-volume allowance, but it should not be added automatically when your project quantity is already based on compacted depth.

Review the cost result

The cost output multiplies metric tonnes by the entered rate. Confirm whether your quotation uses metric tonnes or short tons and whether delivery, mobilization, taxes, tack coat, base work and placement labour are included.

How much does one cubic metre of asphalt weigh?

A planning density near 2.4 metric tonnes per cubic metre is often used, but the actual value depends on the asphalt mix. Use the density supplied for your project whenever possible.

Should depth be entered before or after compaction?

Enter the required finished compacted layer depth. If you also use a compaction factor, confirm that it represents a real additional allowance and does not duplicate an allowance already included by the supplier.

What waste percentage should I use?

There is no universal percentage. Straight, well-measured work may need a modest allowance, while irregular boundaries or difficult placement can require more. Document the reason for the selected value.

Does the calculator include the aggregate base?

No. It calculates the asphalt layer only. Granular sub-base, crushed aggregate, excavation, tack coat, curbs, drainage and other pavement components must be estimated separately.

Are tonnes and short tons the same?

No. One metric tonne equals approximately 1.1023 US short tons. The calculator changes the displayed asphalt quantity when the measurement system is switched, while the cost field remains priced per metric tonne.

Is project information uploaded?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser and does not transmit the dimensions or prices entered into the tool.
